The Powerful Antioxidant Dual that Brings About A Brighter Complexion – Glutathione and Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Glutathione is a peptide molecule synthesized in the body from 3 amino acids, namely glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It is the most important and most abundant water-soluble antioxidant inside the cell.1-4 It is produced by every cell of the body, with especially high levels in the liver.1-4 Similarly, alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant; but unlike glutathione, it can work in both aqueous (inside the cells) and lipid environments (fluid outside the cells).5-8

As antioxidants, they help to delay aging by directly neutralizing free radicals and hence, reducing oxidative stress. One of the most beneficial effects of alpha-lipoic acid and glutathione is their ability to rejuvenate each other and also other essential antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).1-8

Glutathione is also a natural antioxidant in the liver.1-4 Together with alpha-lipoic acid, they help to detoxify xenobiotics, solvents, pesticides, heavy metals and alcohol.4-8 By reducing the toxic load in the body, skin complexion can be greatly improved.

In the skin, glutathione binds to tyrosinase and helps prevent the enzymatic pathways from producing melanin.9-10 Glutathione has been shown to inhibit melanin production, especially when it is taken at a higher dose (450mg and above). 9-10

Glutathione has demonstrated synergistic effect on the body’s production of collagen production. When taken together with collagen, glutathione helps to enhance the production of collagen.

Because of its role in liver detoxification and powerful antioxidant activity, human studies have shown that glutathione supplementation may help with skin brightening.9-10

Milk Thistle Extract Helps to Support Liver

The active extract of milk thistle, called silymarin. Silymarin has shown to be one of the most potent substances in promoting liver health.11-14 Its main benefits appear to be support of healthy DNA function, stabilization of plasma membranes, and stimulation of liver cells.11-14 It has also been shown to even increase total glutathione levels in the liver.15-16 A healthier and enhanced liver detoxification function help to bring about a healthier and fairer skin.9-10
